The most common call we get is a door that won't move at all, or one that lurches partway up and stops. Nine times out of ten that's a broken torsion spring - the coil finally gives out after years of daily expansion and contraction. You'll usually hear it before you see it: a loud bang from the garage, often mistaken for something falling or a car backfiring outside.
The second pattern is a door that runs rough on the track - grinding, a roller that's worn its groove down to metal, or a cable that's frayed and starting to slip off the drum. Age compounds it. A door installed in that window has had decades of heat cycling on its original hardware, even if the rest of the house has been updated. Combine 40-plus years of thermal stress with springs that were never rated for that many cycles, and you get the sudden failures we see most: a snapped spring, a stripped drum, or an opener straining against hardware it was never meant to fight.
